The Palinuro is a three-masted,
iron-hulled barquentine, active as sails trainings vessel for
the Italian Navy. The ship was built at the shipyard Anciens
Chantiers Dubigeon in Nantes (France). In 1951 the Italian Navy
was looking for a replacement for the Cristoforo Colombo (passed
to the Soviet Union after WWII), bought the vessel and renamed
her Palinuro. After a complete renovation the ship is
one of the two sails training vessels in the Italian navy. The
second one is the Amerigo Vespucci, launched in 1931. General
characteristics of the Palinuro: 858 gross tons; overall length,
69 meters; beam, 10 m; sail plan, Barquentine rig, 15 sails.
